Understanding your diagnosis
What does AFP mean?
Alpha-fetoprotein, or AFP, is a protein that may be released into the bloodstream by liver cancer tumor cells. High levels of AFP can indicate when liver cancer has progressed to an advanced stage.
How do you find out if your AFP levels are high?
High levels of AFP can be detected using a simple blood test. This test can help inform treatment decisions.
What is staging?
Your doctor may talk to you about the stage of your disease, using numbers that indicate the level of severity. For example, stage 1 is less severe, whereas stage 4 liver cancer is more severe. Liver cancer treatments may vary by stage, so this can help guide your doctor on the options that make most sense for you.
